German GP - Moto2 Riders Ratings

Hello everyone! We’re back for my Moto2 ratings from the Sachsenring! It was a surprisingly exciting race, which basically sums up Moto2 this year, with various unexpected race leaders and podium challengers, but in the end it was a fairly comfortable victory claimed by Speed Up’s Fermin Aldeguer! Enough with the waffle though, let’s just jump straight into my ratings for the 2024 Moto2 German Grand Prix!

Speed Up:

Fermin Aldeguer - 9.5/10

A race where Aldeguer finally didn’t shoot himself in the foot with silly mistakes. Qualified P3 and was in the podium places for the whole race, including leading the last 11 laps. Had a late scare after the race concluded, being investigated for a tyre pressure infringement, but went penalised in the end.

Alonso Lopez - 6/10

Yet another grand prix where it looks like Alonso Lopez just didn’t have the pace of his Boscoscuro counterparts. Still seems he hasn’t fully adapted to the new Pirelli tyres, still burning through them over race distance. Nevertheless, he still managed to finish P10.

@Pirelli

MT Helmets MSI:

Sergio Garcia - 6.5/10

Not the weekend the world championship leader would’ve been dreaming about. Had the chance to really capitalise on his title rival Joe Roberts riding wounded, but in the end only gained 1 point on the American rider, finishing in P7 while Roberts was P8. Now only sits 7 points clear of his teammate Ai Ogura.

Ai Ogura - 8/10

Another solid weekend for the Japanese man, picking up a podium and closing the gap to his teammate at the top of the standings. Finished P3 picking up 16 points, and is now 7 points behind Garcia. We could see a very interesting inter-team battle for the title this year.

Forward:

Alex Escrig - 3/10

The ratings for this year’s Forward Racing’s riders will very likely be no reflection on the actual rider’s performances, it’s more just the fact that the Forward chassis is as uncompetitive as ever. Outqualified by his rookie teammate, Escrig started 30th, recovering to 22nd, ultimately 5 of those places were DNF’s.

Xavi Artigas - 3/10

Same story on the other side of the Forward garage. Qualified 29th and finished 23rd, a struggle filled rookie season goes on for Artigas. It does not look like it’ll be one to remember come the end of the season in Valencia.

@Pirelli

CFMoto Aspar:

Jake Dixon - 8.5/10

Another podium for the Brit in an injury hit 2024. It looks like Dixon is fighting 100% fit for the first time this season, and it looks like WP Suspension have finally found the right data to fight higher up in the field, with all 3 of the teams running it making massive leaps forward in the last few races.

Izan Guevara - 5/10

Sadly it still doesn’t quite look like Guevara has managed to recapture his form from his 2022 Moto3 title triumph, but it just goes to show how hard the adaptation to the Moto2 class can be. Guevara qualified P13 and finished there in the race as well.

Marc VDS:

Tony Arbolino - 5/10

It was a promising race for Tony Arbolino, challenging for the podium and even the win in the early stages of the race. But as so many other riders did, he ultimately took too much out of his tyres and started to drop back through the field. In the end he ended up finishing P9. 7 seconds off of race winner Aldeguer.

Filip Salac - N/A

Still suffering from an injury picked up in the Assen weekend, and didn’t end up racing in Germany. Get well soon Filip.

Fantic:

Aron Canet - 3/10

Aron Canet honestly just looked lost in Germany. Never really looked competitive throughout Practice and Qualifying, placing 14th on the grid. Went backwards in the race before his race came to a premature end after 18 laps.

Roberto Garcia (R) - 4/10

Roberto Garcia made his Moto2 debut in place of the injured Xavi Cardelus, however his race did not last as long as he would have liked. Qualified a respectable P24 on his first weekend on the Kalex machinery, however he’d only last 11 laps before crashing out of the race.

Honda Team Asia:

Somkiat Chantra - 7/10

A bit of an underperformance in the race for Chantra, having set the lap record during the practice sessions, a lap time only half a second off of the slowest Honda bike in MotoGP. Never really got fired up in the race though, finishing P6, a tenth off of the Ogura-Moreira-Vietti battle.

Mario Aji - 3/10

Aji’s rookie season full of frustration continues. The young Indonesian rider just can’t seem to adapt to the bigger Moto2 bike, as he was the slowest rookie barring Xavi Artigas. Qualified in P25 and had just broken into the top 20 before crashing out of the race with around 3 or 4 laps to go.

@Pirelli

Italtrans:

Dennis Foggia - 4/10

“The Rocket” was not very threatening in Germany over the weekend. Made Q2 and qualified 18th, and only managed to gain 2 places in the race, and this was with 5 DNF’s and a further crash for Binder. A tough adaptation to life in Moto2 which began last year rolls on for the Italian.

Diogo Moreira - 9/10

An extremely impressive weekend for the rookie from Brazil, and one he’s been threatening almost all season. Generally when Diogo has been fighting in the top half of the points this season he’d get beat up late on in races and tumble back down the order, but this time around he held on and even managed to fight for the podium on the final lap. Couldn’t quite beat Ogura and took P4, the best result for a rookie all season.

Husqvarna Intact GP:

Darryn Binder - 4/10

Another weekend where Darryn Binder would have scored good points, but he's made far too many mistakes in good positions this year, crashing out whenever he’s looking competitive. If he can figure out how to be fast without dropping the bike he could be a good competitor for places higher up the field later on in the season.

Senna Agius - 7/10

Yet another very solid weekend for the 2023 European Moto2 World Champion. Qualified well and was fighting for the podium at a track he’d never even ridden on prior to the race weekend. However, he fell into the same trap as a few other riders and burnt his tyres up in the closing stages of the race. Still, an 11th place is still a very nice result for the young Aussie.

American Racing Team:

Joe Roberts - 8.5/10

What an effort from Joe Roberts. A week on from his collarbone injury in Assen, he rocked up to the Sachsenring to try and limit the damage that Sergio Garcia could’ve hit his title challenge with. And limit the damage he definitely did. Looked nowhere early on in the weekend but made steady improvements, ultimately finishing the race in P8, one place behind Garcia. If you'd offered Roberts a 1 point loss to Garcia this week he would’ve absolutely bitten your arm off.

Marcos Ramirez - 4/10

It was not a good race at the Sachsenring on the other side of the garage for Marcos Ramirez. It looked like he’d be able to fight for decent points on Saturday, qualifying in P9. However, it appears that he just didn’t have the race pace. Dropped back to 13th immediately from the start and never managed to recover. Not a great display when you’re getting beaten by your injured teammate.

Preicanos:

Bo Bendsneyder - 3/10

Germany was Bendsneyder’s second race back from injury, and it was not one to remember whatsoever. Qualified decently in P15, but fell straight back through the field before retiring 7 laps into the grand prix with mechanical issues. Shame for the Dutchman as he could’ve scored some decent points.

Jaume Masia - 4.5/10

Another weekend where Masia hasn’t been close to the fastest rookie, but has also been fairly clear of the slowest rookies. Picks up another point in his debut Moto2 season after qualifying P19, so in the end he’ll still take it as a good result.

Daniel Munoz (W) - 4/10

Dani Munoz returned for yet another wildcard for the Preicanos team, having also completed some replacement rides when Bendsneyder was injured. Good effort from the youngster seeing as he made his Moto2 debut only a few races ago, he could really be on a few team’s radars for potential 2025 riders. Qualified 20th and only managed to finish 19th.

Gresini:

Manuel Gonzalez - 6/10

P12 this weekend for the Gresini rider, looked to be on for a decent result throughout the weekend but just couldn't make it in the end, finishing almost 10 seconds behind the leader. Will be looking for some big results soon if the rumours of the Gresini MotoGP team picking him up are true.

Albert Arenas - 3.5/10

It was another fairly nothing weekend for the 2020 Moto3 Champion, not showing much one lap or race pace. Qualified all the way down in 26th and could only get up to P21 on Sunday. Another weekend he’s been outperformed by his teammate. Major improvements needed for Arenas.

RedBull Content pool

KTM Ajo:

Celestino Vietti - 8/10

Another solid weekend for the KTM Ajo rider, and it looks as if the Vietti of old is just about back. Seems he has a competitive package again with the recent improvements of the WP Suspension system. Took the teams first pole position of the year and was just pipped to P4 by Moreira, only 0.010 between the two at the line.

Marcel Schrotter (R) - 4.5/10

Schrotter returns for a second weekend in a row, still filling in for the injured Deniz Oncu. Overall it wasn’t the worst weekend for a replacement rider. Couldn’t quite make it into the points but wasn’t too far off considering he hasn’t ridden a Moto2 machine in a year and a half.

RW Racing:

Barry Baltus - 4/10

The disappointing weekends continued for both of the RW Racing boys, after they started the season with a podium. It was really qualifying that was the enemy of the young Belgian rider, qualifying all the way down in 27th. Baltus did recover 7 places in the race, but in the end it was only good enough for P20, as he still struggles to find a level of consistency.

Zonta van den Goorbergh - 3/10

More struggles for young Zonta and his team as again they struggle to find the consistency to fight for top 10’s. The Dutchman qualified way down in 28th place, with only the two Forward bikes behind. He didn’t get to make any progress before he had to pull into the pits to retire the bike.

Yamaha VR46 Mastercamp:

Jeremy Alcoba - 4.5/10

A really low key weekend for Alcoba in Germany, I honestly kinda forgot he existed. Qualified down in P23 and recovered to P14 in the end, taking 2 points into the summer break. Kudos to him for going another weekend without cleaning another rider out though.

Ayumu Sasaki - 3/10

Another weekend of struggles for the Japanese rookie, finishing the race down in 24th place, only ahead of Darryn Binder who had a crash. Obviously he’s still down on running time after early season injuries but there’s still a long way to go for Sasaki to start fighting further up the field.
