Moto2 Summer Summary

An unlikely championship leader in the form of Sergio Garcia comes into the summer break strong. The MT Helmets - MSI rider showed signs of his potential at the end of last season, but the switch from the Kalex chassis to Boscoscuro has certainly strengthened his championship chances. Sitting on 147 points, he will be hoping to continue his series of strong results in the second half of the season.

Sitting just 7 points behind Sergio Garcia on 140 points is fellow MT Helmets - MSI rider Ai Ogura, who continues to be the tire management master. Ogura started the season struggling with qualifying pace, but his impressive comeback performances, such as at Le Mans where he qualified 17th and crossed the line in 2nd, have been noteworthy. His recent races have shown an improvement in his qualifying pace, showing he's firmly in this fight.

Third in the world championship standings is the only rider in the top 5 on a Kalex chassis, American Joe Roberts, who has found his form at what could be the perfect moment. Although suffering from an injury in the most recent races, his courageous choice to race with a broken collarbone in Germany keeps him in the title fight.

Preseason favorite Fermin Aldeguer’s frustrating start to the season will hopefully turn around in the second half. The Spaniard finished 2023 with 4 wins, but his championship challenge in 2024 has been held back by many mistakes. From jump starts to track limits, he has been through the long lap loop multiple times and has crashed out while serving the penalty, costing himself a haul of points. Currently sitting on 108 points, he will be hoping to go on another winning streak.

Rounding out the top 5 is Alonso Lopez, Aldeguer’s teammate. Lopez started the season with a win in Qatar but has been unable to follow that win up. Recent races have seen him struggle with tire management, fading late in the races. Sitting on 93 points, he will have a mountain to climb in the second half of the season if he wants to stay in the championship battle.

Gresini’s Manu Gonzalez currently sits in sixth position in the championship. The Spanish rider has been looking strong this season, and it feels like it is only a matter of time until he collects his first win. Sitting just behind him in seventh is Fantic Racing rider Aron Canet, who has suffered from some injury struggles so far this season. In eighth place, we see Somkiat Chantra, who has had mixed results so far this season; however, he will be one to watch in coming races as his flyaway performances are always some of his strongest.

The ninth spot in the standings sees Red Bull KTM Ajo rider Celestino Vietti. Similar to Canet, Vietti has been suffering from injury woes that have hurt his championship chances. It should be noted that in races he has been able to start, he has put in solid performances. Rounding out the top ten is CFMOTO Aspar rider Jake Dixon. In what is a common theme so far in Moto2, Dixon finds himself outside expectations after injury woes hampered the early start to his season.

Moto2 has proved thrilling, unpredictable, and entertaining so far in the 2024 season. I, for one, am hoping that the second half of the season remains as thrilling, albeit with a few less injuries.
