Night Owls turning into early birds during the Australian GP

Updated: Apr 2

By: Farah Saleh

Finally it is a race weekend again in Melbourne, Australia. For Middle Eastern fans, like me, don’t forget to sleep early because we will need to wake up with birds to watch the Australian GP. For me, I don’t know how I will be able to finish the race then go to work.

But, I will do it. Because this girl doesn’t back down from a challenge.

At this point, I believe you guys know that I won’t be talking about this week’s grand prix until I explain first something new about formula 1.

We always hear about qualifying but let’s admit it, some of us don’t know how it works.

During qualifying we have three sessions which are Q1, Q2, and Q3.

During the first qualifying session, which is called Q1, all 20 drivers participate in it and for 18 minutes they try to set the fastest lap time. However, the slowest five drivers don’t reach Q2 and their positions get determined according to the timing of each one of them.

The remaining 15 drivers reach Q2 where they try again to set the fastest lap for 15 minutes to reach Q3. And once again the slowest five drivers get eliminated and their positions are determined according to the timing of each one of them.

As for Q3, this session lasts for 12 minutes and the last 10 drivers compete again to determine their final starting positions during the race. The driver who sets the fastest lap during Q3 gets to start from pole.

The last grand prix was in Saudi Arabia where Verstappen won from pole again alongside his teammate Perez in P2 and Leclerc in P3. Let’s not forget that Charles Leclerc also managed to secure the fastest lap.

This weekends’ GP is in Australia, Melbourne. The circuit length is 5.278 KM with a race distance of 306.124 KM. The circuit has 14 turns and 4 Drs zones and for 58 laps, the drivers will fight for the win. Max Verstappen won the last Australian GP with Lewis Hamilton coming in second and Fernando Alonso P3 coming in third.

The 3-times world champion won the first two races of the 2024 season, does that tell you something? Probably not. So, let’s keep being delulu together and cheer for our favorite teams.
