Susie Wolff files complaint against FIA over recent inquiry

On the 20th of March 2024, it was announced that Susie Wolff, current Managing Director of F1 Academy, has filed a complaint as a result of the inquiry that was conducted against her in December of last year.

Wolff announced her decision via social media, with a powerful message that was directed at the FIA. In her statement, she writes that “there has still not been any transparency or accountability in relation to the conduct of the FIA and its personnel in this manner.” Evidently, Wolff has felt that she has been wronged by this investigation, as it resulted in her integrity being questioned and being harassed by the media over claims that were eventually dropped.

Why has Susie Wolff filed a complaint against the FIA?

In December 2023, it was announced that the FIA would be launching an inquiry into a potential conflict of interest, which included both Susie Wolff and her husband Toto. Both Mercedes Formula 1 team and Formula 1 itself denied these allegations, claiming that these suggestions were completely false. Whilst the inquiry did not mention either Wolff by name, the two were heavily linked to the rumours, resulting in a mass eruption of media harassment and speculation that placed the Wolff’s in a very bad position. The FIA also failed to explicitly say what the inquiry was about, but it was suggested that Toto Wolff was benefiting from information that was potentially being sourced from his wife. Despite the inquiry drawing up a large amount of media interest, it was eventually dropped, with the FIA suggesting that there was no reachable conclusion. However, the consequences of the inquiry resulted in both Toto and Susie Wolff’s integrity and character being questioned by both Formula One and other motorsport governing bodies.

Because of this, it is no surprise that Susie Wolff has filed this complaint as she arguably faced more scrutiny than her partner. As stated in her social media announcement, Wolff writes that “Whilst some may think silence absolves them from responsibility - it does not.” This direct statement is referring to the FIA’s lack of transparency when it has came to sharing the details of the investigation, which has resulted in a target media frenzy against the current F1 Academy Managing Director.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who has been with the Silver Arrows since 2013, has shown his support for Susie Wolff in a recent interview. When questioned in a press conference in Melbourne ahead of the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, Hamilton said that he thinks that she (Wolff) “is so brave and she stands for such great values.” The Mercedes driver then went on to criticise the FIA and its past actions regarding the inquiry, suggesting that the organisation lacks “accountability within this sport”, and so evidently has backed Wolff’s decision to submit a complaint.

Whilst the FIA did eventually drop the inquiry, it is evident that there is a long way to go when it comes to publicly investigating incidents like these. By lacking transparency and honesty about the context of the investigation, it meant that Susie Wolff faced mass backlash and outcry over something that was not necessarily true. Moving forward, it is clear that both the FIA and other sport governing bodies must be more honest when it comes to inquiries, as by allowing misinformation and allegations to run rampant, it results in potential career-ending consequences. These organisations need to consider the consequences of their actions, and think about the potential implications of their investigations.
