The disasters of the Chinese GP

By: Farah Saleh

Hey Besties,

I know this is a bit surprising as it is not my usual posting day, but you are going to hear from me more often from now on. However, I’m not going to practice my usual responsibilities as a teacher today. Instead, I come here to gossip with you. Therefore, If you haven’t watched the Chinese Grand Prix don’t worry. Because you girl Farah will serve you all the tea you need.

The race started with Max Verstappen starting the race from Pole and ended with him winning his 58th grand prix, as usual. However, that did not stop the race from being any less interesting.

The race started with a strong move from Fernando Alonso putting himself in front of Perez and I do believe that at some point he was able to challenge Verstappen. However, the intense pressure at the beginning of the race consumed the tires quickly and Checo was able to regain his position.

A great performance from Lando Norris that landed him in P2 and he managed to be driver of the day after he passed Fernando Alonso. Not only that, but he also managed to lead the race and keep Varstappen behind him for a while after both Redbull cars had to pit, leaving their positions open for Norris.

It is sad that the young British driver joined f1 while Verstappen is there, otherwise he would have become a multiple race winner already.

This race had three retirements that started with Valtteri Bottas who had an engine failure and had to retire. unfortunately, when Kick Sauber finally manages to not give him a +20 seconds pitstop, he faces a problem with his car. This team is really full of disappointments.

A huge dramatic scene happened during the race when Lance Stroll crashed into Daniel Ricciardo causing the Aussie to retire from the race. Daniel Ricciardo was having his best weekend since the start of the season when Fernando Alonso, who was in P6, had a lock up causing the cars behind him, including George Russel, Oscar Piastry, and Daniel Ricciardo, to brake. But Lance Stroll did not have the time to do so. Therefore, the front of his car went straight into the Ricciardo’s car causing floor damage which forced him to retire.

The problem is that Stroll held the Australian driver responsible for the crash claiming that he braked suddenly which caused rage amongst Ricciardo’s  fans.

It was a disappointing grand prix for Visa Cash team, as Yuki Tsunoda also had to retire due to contact between him and Kevin Magnussen.

Both Stroll and Magnessun were deemed responsible for the two incidents and they were both hit with a 10 seconds penalty.

At the end, It was again a double podium for Redbull with Verstappen winning and Perez finishing in P3. And Lando Norris separating the teammates by being in P2.

All of this couldn't make us forget how Zhou Guanyu lived his childhood dream surrounded by the Chinese fans who cheered for him even when he finished outside the points. Even if you are not a Zhou fan, admit that you teared with him and felt his emotions. I do believe that moments like this is what makes formula 1 a wonderful sport and I really hope that the rest of the countries will do the same and dedicate a special spot for their driver and his car behind the top 3 finishers.

The next grand prix will be in Miami but we will talk about it next weekend. So, wait for me.
