Understanding the Saudi Arabian GP & the rest of the season

Updated: Apr 2

What a crazy weekend in Bahrain with Max Verstappen opening the new season with a win from pole. Verstappen led every lap during the race and finished with 22 seconds between him and his teammate Perez that fans in the grandstands (including me) were about ready to take a nap while waiting for Checo and the rest of the grid to pass.

This weekend’s grand prix is the Saudi Arabian GP and it is going to be at Jeddah Corniche Circuit which is known as the fastest street circuit in the whole world.

The circuit is 6.174Km with 27 turns, 50 laps and 3 DRS zones which will allow us to see a lot of overtaking. Last year’s winner was the Mexican Sergio Perez alongside his teammate from Redbull Max Verstappen in P2 and the Spaniard Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin in P3.

But, before we go watch the Saudi Arabian GP, let’s learn together a few terms so we can better understand what we will be watching;

Starting with overtaking which is a term that is used a lot during a race.

Overtaking means a driver catching another driver and taking his place and that is what happened when Carlos Sainz overtook Charles Leclerc during the Bahrain GP.

Getting lapped, which means that the drivers at the front finished a whole lap and they started to pass the drivers at the back of the grid who are yet to finish the previous lap. In this case, those drivers at the back need to open the way for the driver passing.

Undercut and overcut are two faces of the same coin. Undercut is when a driver enters the pitlane to change his tires before his opponent while overcut is the opposite and the driver keeps his tires for the longest time possible.

DRS is short for drag reduction system which is a device the driver can control and it helps in overtaking the driver in front of him if they are within one second from each other.

Box Box is a call for the driver to enter the Pitlane to change the tires or fix something in the car.

Now that we know a few terms that can help us during the Saudi Arabian Gp, do you think Checo will be able to repeat last year? or will Max prevent him from doing so?
